Topic: Compare and Contrast Life in the 1840s and Modern Life

Activity Title: Differences in Daily Life Drawing (Julie Hogrefe and Karey Bouvier)

Activity Description: Pretend you are an artist working in a history museum. Your job is to draw a picture of daily life in the 1840s and a picture of daily life in 21st Century. You need to draw a picture of a child doing daily tasks in their time period. Your picture should include a child and what their daily life would be like. Daily life would include their household chores and what they spend their days doing. A girl may be helping their mother cook and a boy may be mending a fence or milking a cow! In modern day, a girl and boy may both be at school or taking place in after-school activities, such as sports or band.

Activity Title: 19th Century Project Runway (Alicia Bianco and Celia Tafuri)
Activity Description: You are going to create a design board (on a posterboard) showcasing at least 4 different important articles of clothing worn in the 19th century. You should remember to include at least 2 male and 2 female articles of clothing (but you can include more!) Treat this like a fashion show and be sure to have a short description under the pictures of the clothing and mention when it is commonly worn.

Activity Title: Looking into Our Future (Kelsey DeJesus and Sarah Piluri)
Activity Description: Students will imagine they are living in today’s world and they find out that it is actually 2160 and they are living in a historical preserve, like Jessie from Running Out of Time. Imagine you are sent outside of your 2011 world and into 2160. What do you see? What is different? Draw a picture of this new world and on the back write a description of the similarities and differences between 2011 and 2160. The finished product will be a drawing of the students “future world” and a short description of how it differs from the present world and what they think the future will be like.

Activity Description: Think of Jessie and the changes she went through thinking that she lived in the 1800’s when it was actually the 1990’s. Create a scrapbook that could be made by a child living in the 1800’s and a child today.
